7 Genius Ways To Store & Hide Toys In Your Living Room

Have you recently found that your child’s toys are completely taking over your living room?

Are you searching for ways to hide toys in your living room, so they are easily accessible but out of sight at the same time?

Perhaps you have a small living room and are looking for some storage ideas you may not have thought about?

If you answered yes to any of the above then you are certainly not alone, because many parents long for a convenient yet elegant place to store their kid’s toys, games and other possessions that seem to pile up month after month.

The good news is there are a number of clever ways to either store your child’s toy’s away in an organized fashion, or even to hide them out of sight if you are looking for a cleaner solution.

From smart dual-purpose furniture to maximizing unused floor space, here are seven creative ways to hide toys in your living room.

7 Ways To Hide Toys In Your Living Room

1. Furniture with Built-In Storage

One of my favourite hidden toy storage solutions in a small living room (or in any sized living room for that matter) is to use furniture with in-built storage.

Think about it for a second.

If you need an ottoman, foot rest, stool or bench in your living room, doesn’t it make perfect sense to get one with hidden storage to help de-clutter your living room?

Thankfully the manufacturers of furniture have thought the same, and nowadays there is plenty of furniture with in-built storage out there to choose from.

If you’re looking for a place to hide board games, books, Lego or other kid’s toys in your small living room then I’d definitely recommend considering this route.

When it comes to my home, we have a clever arm chair with a lid that lifts up to reveal a storage well, and I find this space invaluable when it comes to storing things like books and softy toys.

2. Trunk

One of the best toy storage ideas for a living room – not to mention one of the most stylish – is without doubt a beautiful trunk.

The reason these are so good is because they offer tons of storage but are decorative items at the same time, meaning you can have the best of both worlds.

You can choose to keep the top clear to make getting toys in and out easier, or if your child is a bit older, you might want to place something like a coffee table book or some candles on top.

3. Cubby Shelves

If you are like me and prefer a minimalist style yet practical way to hide your child’s toys out of sight, then you will probably love the idea of using storage cubes.

These are great because you simply fill the cube with your kid’s loose toys, and then you have the option of placing the cube wherever you want in your living room.

Some popular places to store the cube are in a book case, in a cabinet, or even stacked together on top of each other.

Simple, easy and budget-friendly – what more could you want!

4. Under Your Couch Or Armchair

If there’s one piece of furniture that all living rooms have it’s a couch or armchair, and depending on the style of yours, you might have some unused storage space at your disposal.

The space underneath a couch, sofa or armchair could be the perfect place to store toys like board games and puzzles, provided your couch has legs and is raised off the ground.

You can either place the items directly underneath the armchair or couch, or if you’re looking for a cleaner solution (both visually and hygienically), then you may want to invest in some flat storage bins like these.

5. Baskets With Lids

No article on the best toy storage solutions for a living room would be complete without mentioning baskets.

Baskets come in a range of different styles, shapes and materials, which is one of the reasons I love them and why you’ll probably love this idea too.

Woven and cotton baskets like the one below are personal favorites of mine, because they look good in almost any living room, and are much more pleasing to the eye than plastic storage bins!

Baskets come in many different styles, from basic plastic to more decorate wicker, canvas or even solid wood, but if you’re looking for one that provides hidden storage, make sure you buy a basket with a lid.

Because they easily add texture, color and style to a room, baskets are a fantastic DIY storage solution , and with so many options there’s bound to be something suitable for everyone’s budget!

6. Storage Within Toys

Here’s an odd question but bear with me for a second.

Does your child have a large toy that includes its own storage?

When you think about toys such as play kitchens and large doll houses, you realize they often have a lot of precious space that you may not be fully utilizing.

As an example, look at the image with of this little girl’s playhouse and just think of all the other small toys you you could nearly store away in there!

7. Toy Rotation

Lastly, if you are really struggling to organize and hide your child’s toys in your living room, then you may need to consider rotating their toys from time to time.

It’s something I’ve had to do in the past and I acknowledge it’s a bit of a frustrating solution.

But rotating toys in and out of storage (which might be your garage or attic) can be an excellent way to free up space in your living room, kitchen or other rooms in your house.

Sure, you might feel bad about putting some of your child’s toys away for a while, but just think of their reaction and excitement when you bring out a box full of toys they had forgotten about in a few weeks’ time!

Conclusion

And that’s a wrap, 7 clever and practical ways to hide your child’s toys out of sight.

Whether hidden toy storage solution you opt for, be it a vintage trunk, storage bins with lids, toy rotation or any combination of the ideas above, I hope the ideas in this post help you solve your storage challenge in a simple, practical and elegant way!
